For our first SOIL STORIES gathering in 2022, we are so pleased to feature Julie Maitland, one of the first and staunchest supporters of New Mexico's Healthy Soil Program
Julie Maitland is the Division Director for Agricultural Programs and Resources (APR). She has been in this role for 20 years. Her program encompasses natural resource policy analysis and natural resource programs. Included in her portfolio is the Healthy Soil Program, Soil and Water Conservation District Program, Administration for the Soil and Water Conservation Commission, as well as policy issues related to water, land management, wildlife, conservation, climate, among others.
She oversees other programs including the Acequia and Community Ditch Fund, Agriculture Workforce Development Program, and a number of large grants related to endangered species, technical service provider programs, and collaborative land management improvement projects. The division staff, without whom none of this good work could occur, interact with tribal, federal, state, and local governmental entities, public stakeholders, and NGOs to advance a variety of programs and to assist the agriculture industry in New Mexico.
