Please join us on Saturday, March 26th, 2022, for the grand opening of the Middle Rio Grande Community Soil Health Lab. We will be bringing together our local leaders, soil scientists, farmers, ranchers, master gardeners, and others for a day of learning the language of soil and how it speaks to us. We are honored that Lorenzo Candelaria, 7th generation Atrisco farmer and community leader, will be attending and blessing our soils prior to the start of the irrigation season.

Soil health is critical to our health and local food production, functioning water systems, plant and animal health, and a stable climate. Opening of the Middle Rio Grande Community Soil Health Lab is an accomplishment that will not only provide our community with a much-needed tool for diagnosing the health of our New Mexico soils but will offer solutions for creating and maintaining soil health based on:

  • The 5 Soil Health Principles
  • Physical soil properties like texture and water holding capacity
  • Chemical soil properties like pH and electrical conductivity
  • Biological soil properties like microbial respiration
  • Past and present management history
  • Soil resource potential mapping and planning

Please join us for a day of learning and honoring traditions—old and new—as we enjoy New Mexico music and dancing, and Native cuisines. Most of all, come and enjoy the connections we make with each other and the common ground on which we all stand.
