Friday, Oct. 15, 2021-Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021: Chaco Canyon Camp, Hike and Bike. Camp at Gallo Campground in Chaco Canyon National Historic Park on Friday night. Leaders have reserved Group Campsite #1 at Gallo Campground for Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16.  Those using the group campsite are encouraged to chip in and help the leaders defray the cost.  Group campsites are limited to 20 occupants.  The first 20 outing registrants to indicate they intend to stay in the group site will have claim to a site.  Others wishing to camp at Gallo Campground should secure campsites early by going to rec.gov.  Come and enjoy the evening sky and meet new friends. Group will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Pueblo Alto trail head and hike to Pueblo Alto and New Alto ruins. This four-mile hike will cover steep, rocky terrain at the start and then climb gradually over 500 feet to the Chacoan sites above. We will stop for many photo ops and to view the interesting geology, plant life and spectacular vistas above the canyon. After we descend we will have lunch and the group will convene at the visitors’ center, mount bikes and ride the 10 mile Canyon Loop Drive and visit the major ruins such as Pueblo Bonito and Chetro Ketl on the way.  If participants choose not to join in the bike tour, they are on their own.  For those who opt for the second day's outing, we will hike to Wiijiji Ruins in the Chaco National Historic Park, a four mile round trip hike to a large, interesting ruin.  This hike is rated as "Easy" as hikers trek over flat terrain with little elevation gain. This outing is appropriate for minors 16 or over accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No dogs. Due to the rough road conditions entering the park, a vehicle with adequate clearance is highly recommended.  Register for this outing no later than Sunday, October 10.  A list of recommended gear and any added information will be sent to registrants on Monday, October 11.  Contact the outings leaders for further information
