Since 2010, Bernalillo County Open Space and its partners have offered a free series of workshops that provides the public with practical experience and knowledge for transforming their backyards into a thriving urban oasis of food, medicine, and wildlife habitat. The guest speakers for this series are all experts in their field who present firsthand knowledge on topics such as irrigation, livestock, insects, gardening, seed saving, and much more. The workshops are held at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House History and Cultural Center.
Seed saving is an ancient and important skill allowing people to develop stronger plants that are better adapted, more diverse and vital in local food production. Our panel of experts will discuss the history and process of seed saving. They will explain why fall planting is so important and share some of the secrets of the best varieties. The ABQ-BernCo Library Seed Library will be on hand to check out seed packs and answer questions. Bring your saved seeds to share, and join this growing tradition-honoring practice.
