Thrift Exchange & Repair Cafe at UNM's Sustainability Expo

Hello, I am a senior in the Sustainability Studies program. For my final project, I am raising awareness about waste. Oftentimes, when something breaks or something new comes out, the items get thrown away.

I am challenging people to think about where all this stuff goes. I know it’s easy to throw something away and not care. Out of sight, out of mind. But, 99% of the things we run through the system of consumption are waste within 6 months, and our planet is running out of space for all this stuff. Landfills aren’t a sustainable solution. To keep up with the demand of new products, our resources are becoming few, far, and in-between. In the past three decades, 1/3 of our plant’s natural resources have been consumed.

I will be hosting a Thrift Store & Repair Cafe booth at the 10th Annual UNM Sustainability Expo, located at Cornell Mall.

A Repair Cafe is an concept that originated in the Netherlands, to bring people together to repair broken items. Volunteers bring broken items from home and watch, learn or help as the repairs get done. Some things are fixed during the event, and for more challenging items people are referred to local specialty repair shops.

Please bring your knowledge, tools, and broken items to create our own community repair cafe. There will be a few skilled repair men and women onsite throughout the day (times may vary).

To make thrift donations on campus: There is a box in the Biology front office (167 Castetter Hall ) to drop off your items. The office is open Monday- Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please make sure the items you drop off are in relatively good, clean condition. Toy can bring anything from clothes, house decor, blankets, appliances, anything you'd like. Donations may also be brought to the booth the day of. This is an exchange, no payment for the items is required.

To make thrift donations off campus: Please direct message me.

If you, or someone you know, can "fix things" and think you could showcase your skill and/or teach people how to do it themselves, please message me! This includes small appliances, furniture, clothing, anything you can think of really. I am still in need of skilled volunteers that can dedicate time to stay at the booth.
